5 Bus-stop screens have been sabotaged in Bristol, in retaliation for the massive proliferation of these technologies into the public realm. They are un-wanted pollution and their spread is a direct result of the impoverishment of the public sector- apparently it’s necessary to fund individual bus stops by shoving hyper-consumer capitalism down our throats whilst we wait the (inevitably late) bus. Not only are they polluting our minds and culture, they are a bright eyesore, with constantly changing, highly illuminated displays impacting the already stressed urban bird population. Maybe most horrific is the sheer power necessary to run the screens themselves, pumping extra CO2 unto the atmosphere in a downward spiral of energy consumption and increased consumerism powered by the ads. The cycle must be broken. The ads must be broken.
