ZAP Games Award Show
Saturday 30th November 2024
6pm – 8pm
Bureau of Silly Ideas
18 Valentia Place, Brixton, London, SW9 8PJ
As the consumerism juggernaut of Black Friday advertising smashes through our planetary boundaries, join us for an evening of celebration and resistance in Brixton, South London. There’ll be talks, light food, drinks and an awards show.
‘Z.A.P.’ is french for Zone Anti-Publicité (anti-advertising zone). Born in Brussels, the ZAP Games is 2 weeks of creative actions against the dominance of corporate advertising in our streets. Affinity groups take action in any style they wish – with prizes and nominations for action categories including:
- Most-family friendly intervention
- Most beautiful intervention
- Big – the prize for going large with your action
- Digital Screens
- Greatest number of ad panels intervened
- Political détournement
- Surprise category
- Sculpture category
The Awards Show will be a chance to hear how the relatively new phenomena of Black Friday is accelerating our waste and pollution problems and pressuring us to buy more and more things – regardless of the negative impacts. Around 80% of everything bought on Black Friday winds up in landfill, recycling or incineration within 12 months.
In the UK, a 2024 poll conducted by YouGov on behalf of ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ has revealed that 70% of people agree Black Friday promotes excessive consumption, 42% think it’s bad for the environment, and 14.5million Britons would be willing to ‘boycott’ the capitalist celebration altogether.
For more information on how you can participate in Black Friday see this Explainer Pack (pdf) below.
